Nigeria
Despite being one of the world’s top oil producers, much of Nigeria—especially rural and remote areas—still suffers from deep poverty. About 70% of the population lives below the poverty line, with limited access to education and opportunity.
Swisshand currently supports over 25 programs across these underserved regions, partnering with Catholic dioceses and trusted local NGOs. Many projects are spread across vast distances, some over 800 km apart.
Nigeria’s diverse climate—from the dry northern savannah to the fertile, rainy south—makes agriculture a vital source of income. Yet, inequality between North and South, and ongoing ethnic and religious tensions, continue to hold many back. Only half of school-aged children attend school, as many are expected to help support their families from an early age.
This is where Swisshand steps in.
Through microcredits, training, and local mentoring, Swisshand empowers those most in need—especially women—to build small businesses, support their families, and gain independence. Our work brings real change where it’s needed most, helping people shape a more stable and hopeful future.
